Divorce or separation

If you’re going through a divorce or separation, dealing with your shared finances can be complex and stressful.

To help, we’ve listed some organisations below that can provide you with advice and support, so you can get things on track as soon as possible.

If you’re both named on the mortgage with us, there are some things you might need to do, depending on your situation. See below for related support options and the steps you may need to take with your mortgage.

Emotional and practical support

Relate gives advice and information to those who need relationship support. It is the UK’s largest provider of relationship support and offers a wide range of services.

Its dedicated Help with separation and divorce page provides support and guidance to help make your separation easier for you and your family.

Citizens Advice offers free, confidential and impartial advice on legal, money and other problems. Citizens Advice also provide the opportunity for face to face advice through their local advice centres.

For online information or to find your local advice centre, visit their website and select England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland from the options presented.

MoneyHelper provides free, clear and unbiased advice on money related issues. You can contact them on 0800 138 7777.

You can also visit its dedicated website section which contains several guides to help you know what you need to do following a divorce or separation.

Changes to your mortgage

If you’re both named on the mortgage and you no longer plan to live together, please let us know your new correspondence addresses so we can keep you informed about your account.

We’ll send statements and routine letters about your account to both correspondence addresses. Don’t worry, any letters containing information that’s meant for only one person will be sent to the correspondence address for that person alone.

Changing the legal ownership of your property (and removing someone from the mortgage) can be complex, and you will usually need to involve a solicitor. Please contact us and we’ll talk you through it.

You can also visit our making changes page for more information on how to provide us with a new address or how you can add or remove someone from your mortgage.
